Identification and Cautions

Known as Eiji Chōgin because of the "永" mark. All chōgin from the Hōei era are "namako-shaped" and look similar, requiring verification of the stamp to determine the type. As the silver purity decreases, the copper ratio increases, causing the surface to appear darker and prone to tarnish or verdigris over time. However, changes due to storage conditions are substantial, so type determination cannot be based on color alone. Weighed silver coins do not have a consistent standard, with individual differences being the norm, making determination by weight difficult.
